NOVIB Gender Peer Exchange

Why Celebrate

This report presents proceedings of a Gender peer exchange visit that took place on the 9th of July 2008 in a peri- urban community located approximately 23 km from the city centre. This community is known as Lukwanga in Wakiso Sub County Wakiso District.

The purpose of the visit was to expose member institutions supported by NOVIB on good gender practices so as to enable and enhance effective integration and mainstreaming of gender in programmes particularly at practice level.

A total of 30 people (10 men, 20 women) participated in the exchange of which 11 were NOVIB grantees from SEATINI, CEFORD, HAG, ULA, ACORD, UWONET among others. Participants also included members from Agali awamu Farmers Development Association and Alinyikira Farmers Development Association who where hosting the exchange.

Sites visited which show highlights of key gender dimensions included
  1. A community knowledge centre where farmers and the community share information and experiences, innovations, documentation of information by men and women, leadership roles in the centre.
  2. Piggery Technology Development Site that belongs to Alinyikira Farmers Development Association and individuals who have constructed their own sites
  3. Central banana plot, which is a demonstration site for community but also an income project for the members, the enterprise aspect and the effect on family relation
  4. Christine a credible mentor and female mobilizer for women
  5. A model home that has high adaptability of skills, local innovations and economic empowerment of women through women led enterprises.

Key issues raised by the participants were mostly around benefit sharing, equity, decision making, leadership responsibilities, roles of members as well as balancing of time between group obligations and domestic responsibilities.
Major outputs of the exchange included
  1. Sharing of lessons and experiences among the participants
  2. Exposure to good gender practices
  3. Advice from the delegation to community on the different areas of expertise
